When spring returns
A. Somervell
The earth is bare, the earth is brown
While winter has his reign;
The land is green, the land is gold
When spring returns again.
The woods and fields in rapturous mood,
Intoxicate with bliss,
Prepare to greet a longing world
At spring's awak'ning kiss.
The woods are purple, green and brown,
With primrose floor below;
The trees for very happiness
Put on a veil of snow;
In ev'ry stream, and ev'ry lake,
Blue heav'n itself I see,
And angels' happy laughter rings
From ev'ry hedge and tree.
Then why should I, when nature wakes,
Keep winter in my heart?
For I am ready like the earth,
And Love will do his part.
Come spring to earth, come Love to me:
I feel thee drawing near,
And winter melts before thy smile,
For spring and heav'n are here.
