Was it not recently that with magic sounds
Aleksandr Yegorovich Varlamov
Was it not recently that with magic sounds
we danced about the hall, she and I?
Her tender arms were warm,
her star-like eyes were bright.
Yesterday they sang dirges,
the tomb was open;
her eyes closed, motionless,
she slept beneath a brocade.
I slept; above my bed
the moon hung like the dead...
yet to wondrous sounds, she and I
were flying about the hall, the two of us...
