Eve of St. Nepomuk's Day
Arnold Mendelssohn
Small lights float upon the river,
children are singing on the bridges,
and both the large bells and the small are tolling from the cathedral
conforming with this mood of devotion and enchantment.
The small lights are disappearing, the stars are disappearing;
thus did the soul of our saint dissolve,
for he could not divulge
the sins that had been confided in him.
Little light, float! Sing, you children!
Choir of children, o sing, sing on!
And declare no less
what brings a star to the stars!
