The sacred house in Loretto
Carl Loewe
Brightest cloud in the blue,
Pure swan on the shining sea!
Oh, what brilliant vision!
I see Angels around you!
Brightly blooms a rainbow!
You, o queen of heaven,
Resting upon it, you look down
On this world of sin!
Sainted virgin, the vision
Overcomes my spirit,
Teach me its meaning,
What it foretells, what it promises!
And the shimmering vision parted
Through the breath of mornings gentle wind
On the slowly moving cloud appeared,
a small reed covered house,
And the wanderer hears the words
Clearly: "That is the house of Christ,
where when he was a child,
God's Son went in and out.
To conceal it from the heathen,
we bear it away,
You see, we are servants of Christ
And Loretto is our port."
Be blest, loyal guards!
But beware around the grave of Christ,
That pack of traitors have
surrounded with the followers of the serpent!
And down from the bright region,
From the rainbow's heights
Mercyful words flow,
Sacred murmuring sounds:
"Thank the Father, that to comfort you,
has given you today the house of Christ,
However struggle becomes the redeemed
who believe in the grave of Christ."
