To the eternal
Carl Loewe
To the eternal our songs!
whatever touches the heart,
trust, trust, our brethren,
he, that embraces the worlds.
He causes the leaves to die
and the sun itself to shine,
but none he lets be lost,
anew shall it bloom again.
If in the winter storms rage
and hard frost settles,
he leaves the world
covered with a white gown.
Resting in deep silence,
resembling the mother's lap,
sleeps in deep silence then
all the grass and flowers.
And as May appears,
breaking forth then afresh
with the innocent air of youth
the infinite chorus of life.
When we in deep silence
in the bosom of cool earth
sleep, his will calls
us to a more beautiful place.
