Gloom enwraps the sleeping city
Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich
Gloom enwraps the sleeping city,
Lanterns flickering and pale...
Daybreak's distant scintillations
Gleam beyond the dark Neva.
In this faraway reflection,
In these glimmerings of flame
Lay concealed the origin
Of my forsaken, joyless days...
