The rose and the laurel tree
E. Grell
Of love the manly laurel speaks
To the rose, a maiden blossom;
She hides the while her glowing cheeks
In her mother moss's bosom.
Yet soon with joy she looks above,
And unto him unveileth
Her faithful heart, while bliss and love
In fragrance she exhaleth.
O noble tree! o lovely rose!
Your life dawn's brightly beaming.
Oh, may it pass to peaceful close
Like happy childhood's dreaming!
May music oft with holy pow'r
Unlock for you heav'ns treasures,
And if there comes an anxious hour,
Love sweeten it with pleasures.
