Ja! Ich glaub: Solches hat er volbracht,

Yes, I believe that Christ has done this,

Des Vaters Zorn zunicht gemacht,

Has appeased his Father's wrath,

Der Menschheit ewig Heil erworben,

Brought mankind eternal salvation

Und ist dafür am Kreuz verstorben.

Through dying on the cross.

Doch weiss ich, solches kommt zugut

Yet I know, only he partakes of this,

Nur dem, der heilig ist und gut:

Whose soul is good and holy:

Durch gute Werk und Frommheit eben

Through good deeds and piety,

Erkauft er sich ein ewig Leben.

He shall gain eternal life.

Da sieh, so stehts um meine Werk:

But look at the state of my deeds:

Von Sünden hab ich einen Berg

I have weighed myself down

So überschwer auf mich geladen,

With such a mountain of sins

Dass mich Gott gar nit kann begnaden,

That God, the most righteous of all,

Als er der Höchstgerechte ist.

Could never grant me mercy.
