How often you fed on forbidden things

Georg Philipp Telemann

How often you fed on forbidden things

that folk know will increase your status.

Your clothes, laundry, shoes and socks are expensive,

beautiful and new, as if the young hero comes from wealth.

But one inquires secretly, who the parents were,

and one discovers the answer, the experience of the poorest people:

The father went into the woods and collected broom-twigs,

the mother made rope for little money.
