Maiden's song

Gustav Trautmann

[ The shore is so silent this morning,

hardly one little fish wants to leap yet.

At the litte bank, amid the reeds and rushes,

A washermaiden is kneeling busily.

O young blood, hardly fifteen years old,

your eyes still sleepy,

your little dress shabby and hiked up high,

with singing you pass the time: ]

On Judgment Day I will rise again,

and immediately look for my sweetheart;

and if I cannot find him,

I will lie down again and sleep.

Heartache, you Eternity!

Only with another comes happiness!

And if my sweetheart comes not in,

then I don't wish to be in Paradise!"
