L'âpre hiver au creux du val,
The harsh winter in the valley hollow
A soufflé sur la rivière.
Has blown onto the river.
Un lourd manteau de cristal
A heavy coat of crystal
s'est étendu sur l'eau claire.
Has stretched itself on the clear water.
Les poissons bleus ont filé
The blue fish have lined up
Dans les algues serpentines.
In the snake-like algae.
Et l'âpre hiver a gelé
And the bitter winter froze
Les doigts roses des ondines!
The mermaids' pink fingers!
