Autumn feelings

Hans Erich Pfitzner

As distant steps you hear resound,

however far you roam is never far enough,

as dreams like the leaves, fall

and blow away, sighing in the wind.

Invading like faint sorrows,

the pain, ever new, always remains,

how the memory of bygone days,

how it goes only to return again.

You hear, as through the tree-tops

the hours inexorably pass,

the fog dripping through the 'tops;

you weep and do not know why.
