Die Einsame
Hans Erich Pfitzner
Wär's dunkel, ich läg' im Walde,
Were it dark, I'd lie in the forest,
Im Walde rauscht's so sacht,
The forest murmurs so softly,
Mit ihrem Sternenmantel
With her cloak of stars
Bedeckt mich da die Nacht,
The night covers me there,
Da kommen die Bächlein gegangen,
The brooklets steal up and ask:
Ob ich schon schlafen tu?
If I'm not already asleep.
Ich schlaf' nicht, ich hör' noch lang
I do not sleep, for long yet I'll listen
Den Nachtigallen zu,
To the nightingales,
Wenn die Wipfel über mir schwanken,
When the treetops sway above me,
Es klinget die ganze Nacht,
They sound the whole night through,
Das sind im Herzen die Gedanken,
They are the heart's own thoughts
Die singen, wenn Niemand wacht.
That sing when no one's awake.
