Gutmann und Gutweib

Hugo Wolf

Und morgen fällt St. Martins Fest,

It is Saint Martinmas eve,

Gutweib liebt ihren Mann;

Goodwife loves her husband;

Da knetet sie ihm Puddings ein

She's been preparing him puddings

Und bäckt sie in der Pfann'.

And now cooks them in the pan.

Im Bette liegen beide nun,

Both of them now lie in bed,

Da saust ein wilder West;

A furious west wind starts to blow;

Und Gutmann spricht zur guten Frau:

And Goodman says to his good wife:

„Du riegle die Türe fest.“

'Get up and bar the door.'

„Bin kaum erholt und halb erwarmt,

'I've hardly had time to warm myself,

Wie käm' ich da zur Ruh;

How would I ever get to sleep;

Und klapperte sie einhundert Jahr,

And though it banged for a hundred years,

Ich riegelte sie nicht zu.“

I would never bar that door.'

Drauf eine Wette schlossen sie

Whereupon they whispered a bet

Ganz leise sich ins Ohr:

Into each other's ear:

So wer das erste Wörtlein spräch',

Let him who speaks the first word

Der schöbe den Riegel vor.

Get up and bar the door.

Zwei Wanderer kommen um Mitternacht

Two travellers arrive as midnight strikes,

Und wissen nicht, wo sie stehn,

Without knowing where they were,

Die Lampe losch, der Herd verglomm,

The lamp went out, the coals burned low,

Zu hören ist nichts, zu sehn.

There was neither light nor sound.

„Was ist das für ein Hexenort?

'What kind of haunted place is this?

Da bricht uns die Geduld!“

Our patience is at an end!'

Doch hörten sie kein Sterbenswort,

But there was not a word in reply,

Des war die Türe schuld.

For that the door was to blame.

Den weißen Pudding speisten sie,

And first they ate the white pudding,

Den schwarzen ganz vertraut;

And then they ate the black;

Und Gutweib sagt sich selber viel,

And Goodwife says much to herself,

Doch keine Silbe laut.

But not a word out loud.

Zu diesem sprach der eine dann:

One traveller now said to the other:

„Wie trocken ist mir der Hals!

'My throat's so parched and dry!

Der Shrank, der klafft, und geistig riecht's,

The cupboard's wide open, it smells of spirits,

Da findet sich's allenfalls.

That'll be where they keep it.

Ein Fläschchen Schnaps ergreif' ich da,

I'll grab a bottle of Schapps,

Das trifft sich doch geschickt!

Just what the doctor ordered!

Ich bring' es dir, du bringst es mir,

I'll serve you and you'll serve me,

Und bald sind wir erquickt.“

And soon we'll be refreshed.'

Doch Gutmann sprang so heftig auf

But Goodman leapt wildly to his feet,

Und fuhr sie drohend an:

And bellowed in their face:

„Bezahlen soll mit treurem Geld,

'Whoever's wasted my own Schnapps

Wer mir den Schnaps vertan!“

Shall pay for it in cash!'

Und Gutweib sprang auch froh heran,

At which our Goodwife started up

Drei Sprüng', als wär' sie reich:

And skipped about with glee:

„Du Gutmann sprachst das erste Wort,

'Goodman, you've spoken first,

Nun riegle die Türe gleich!“

Get up and bar the door!'
