Ich armer Teufel, Herr Baron
Hugo Wolf
Ich armer Teufel, Herr Baron,
Poor devil that I am,
Beneide Sie um Ihren Stand,
I envy you, my Lord Baron, your rank,
Um Ihren Platz so nah dem Thron
Your position so near the throne,
Und um manch schön Stück Ackerland,
Your many stretches of fine fertile land,
Um Ihres Vaters festes Schloß,
Your father's fortified castle,
Um seine Wildbahn und Geschoß.
His hunting grounds and firearms.
Mich armen Teufel, Herr Baron,
Poor devil that I am, it seems to me,
Beneiden Sie, so wie es scheint,
My Lord Baron, that you envy me
Weil die Natur vom Knaben schon
Because Nature, from boyhood on,
Mit mir es mütterlich gemeint.
Treated me like a mother.
Ich ward, mit leichtem Mut und Kopf,
With a light heart and free of care,
Zwar arm, doch nicht ein armer Tropf.
I grew up to be poor but not a poor wretch.
Nun dächt' ich, lieber Herr Baron,
Well now, my dear Lord Baron, I rather think
Wir ließen's bleiben wie wir sind:
We should remain as we are:
Sie blieben des Herrn Vaters Sohn,
You your noble father's son,
Und ich blieb' meiner Mutter Kind.
And I my mother's child.
Wir leben ohne Neid un Haß,
Let us live without hate or envy,
Begehren nicht des andern Titel,
Let us not covet each other's title,
Sie keinen Platz auf dem Parnaß,
No place on Parnassus for you,
Und keinen ich in dem Kapitel.
And none in the Peerage for me
