Über Nacht

Über Nacht, über Nacht

By night, by night

Kommt still das Leid,

Grief comes silently,

Und bist du erwacht,

And once you awake –

O traurige Zeit!

O mournful time,

Du grüssest den dämmernden Morgen

You greet the dawn

Mit Weinen und mit Sorgen.

With tears and sorrow.

Über Nacht, über Nacht

By night, by night

Kommt still das Glück

Happiness comes silently,

Und bist du erwacht,

And once you awake –

O selig Glück!

O blessed fate,

Der düstre Traum ist zerronnen,

The sombre dream has vanished

Und Freude ist gewonnen.

And joy is to hand.

Über Nacht, über Nacht

By night, by night

Kommt Freud' und Leid,

Come joy and grief,

Und eh du's gedacht,

And before you're aware,

Verlassen dich beid',

Both leave you

Und gehen dem Herrn zu sagen,

And go to tell the Lord

Wie du sie getragen.

How you have borne them.
