Durch die dufterfüllte Au,

Through the scent-filled meadow,

Muss ich schämen mich so sehr

I'm forced to feel so ashamed

Vor den Blümlein ringsumher!

In front of all the flowers!

Täublein auf dem Kirchendach,

The doves on the church roof,

Fischlein in dem Mühlenbach

The little fish in the millstream,

Und das Schlänglein still im Kraut,

And the still snake in the heather,

Alles fühlt und nennt sich Braut.

All know what it is to wed.

Apfelblüt im lichten Schein

Apple-blossom in the sunlight

Dünkt sich stolz ein Mütterlein;

Proudly deems itself a mother;

Freudig stirbt so früh im Jahr

Butterfly and mate are glad

Schon das Papillonenpaar.

To die so early in the year.

Gott, was hab ich denn getan,

God, what then have I done

Dass ich ohne Lenzgespan,

That, with no springtime mate,

Ohne einen süssen Kuss

And not a single sweet kiss,

Ungeliebet sterben muss?

I must die unloved?
