Du alte Mutter

C. Ives

Du alte Mutter, bist so arm,

My dear old mother, poor thou art,

Und schaffst im Schweiss wie Blut,

And toilest day and toilest night,

Doch immer noch ist's Herz dir warm

But ever warm remains my heart,

Und du gabst mir den starken Arm

'Twas thou my courage did'st impart,

Und diesen wilden Mut.

My arm of sturdy might.

Du wischtest ab die Träne mein,

Thou'st wip'd away each childish tear,

War's mir im Herzen bang,

When I was sore distrest,

Und küßtest mich den Knaben dein,

And kiss'd thy little laddie dear,

Und hauchtest in die Brust hinein

And taught him songs that banish fear

Den siegesfrohen Sang.

From ev'ry manly breast.

Du gabst mir, was beseligt mich,

And more than all thou'st given me,

Das weiche Herz das Herz dazu;

A humble true and tender heart;

Drum Alte will ich lieben dich,

So dear old mother, I'll love thee

Wohin mein Fuß auch richtet sich,

Where e'er my foot may wander free,

Wohl sonder Rast und Ruh.

Till death our lives shall part.

Mutter, Mutter, Mutter.

Mother, Mother, Mother.
