Das Leben ist ein Traum
Haydn, Joseph
Das Leben ist ein Traum!
Life is a dream!
Wir schlüpfen in die Welt und schweben
We slip into the world and float
Mit jungem Zahn
With young teeth
Und frischem Gaum
And fresh palate
Auf ihrem Wahn
On its illusions
Und ihrem Schaum,
And froth,
Bis wir nicht mehr an Erde kleben:
Till we can cling to earth no more:
Und dann, was ist's, was ist das Leben?
And then – what is this life?
Das Leben ist ein Traum!
Life is a dream!
Das Leben ist ein Traum:
Life is a dream:
Wir lieben, uns're Herzen schlagen,
We love, our hearts throb,
Und Herz an Herz
And hardly has heart
Gefüget kaum,
Joined heart,
Ist Lieb' und Scherz
When love and jest,
Ein leerer Schaum,
Turn to empty bubbles,
Ist hingeschwunden, weggetragen!
Vanish and are borne away!
Was ist das Leben? hör ich fragen:
What, I hear you ask, is life?
Das Leben ist ein Traum.
Life is a dream!
Das Leben ist ein Traum:
Life is a dream:
Wir lieben, uns're Herzen schlagen,
We love, our hearts throb,
Und Herz an Herz
And hardly has heart
Gefüget kaum,
Joined heart,
Ist Lieb' und Scherz
When love and jest,
Ein leerer Schaum,
Turn to empty bubbles,
Ist hingeschwunden, weggetragen!
Vanish and are borne away!
Was ist das Leben? hör ich fragen:
What, I hear you ask, is life?
Das Leben ist ein Traum.
Life is a dream!
