La cigale et la fourmi
Jacques Offenbach
La Cigale, ayant chanté tout l'été,
The grasshopper, having sung
Se trouva fort dépourvue
All summer long,
Quand la bise fut venue.
Found herself most destitute,
Pas un seul petit morceau
When the North Wind came.
De mouche ou de vermisseau.
Not a morsel to her name
Elle alla crier famine
Of either fly or worm.
Chez la Fourmi sa voisine,
She blurted out her tale of want
La priant de lui prêter
To her neighbour Mistress Ant,
Quelque grain pour subsister
And begged her for a loan
Jusqu'à la saison nouvelle.
Of grain to last her
Je vous paierai, lui dit-elle,
Till the coming spring.
Avant l'août, foi d'animal,
'I shall pay you', were her words,
Intérêt et principal.
'On insect oath, before the fall,
La Fourmi n'est pas prêteuse;
Interest and principal.'
C'est là son moindre défaut.
Mistress Ant is not a lender—
Que faisiez-vous au temps chaud?
That's the last thing to reproach her with!
Dit-elle à cette emprunteuse.
'Tell me how you spent the summer?'
Nuit et jour à tout venant
Was what she asked this borrower.
Je chantais, ne vous déplaise.
'Night and day, to every comer,
Vous chantiez? j'en suis fort aise:
I sang, so please you ma'am.'
Et bien! dansez maintenant.
'You sang? I'm overjoyed.
