Ein Reiter durch das Bergtal zieht,
A horseman rides through the mountain valley
Im traurig stillen Trab:
At a sad, silent trot:
„Ach! zieh ich jetzt wohl in Liebchens Arm,
Ah! do I ride into my beloved's arms,
Oder zieh ich ins dunkle Grab?“
Or into the dark grave?
Die Bergstimm Antwort gab:
The mountain's voice replied:
„Ins dunkle Grab!“
Into the dark grave!
Und weiter reitet der Reitersmann,
And onwards still the horseman rides,
Und seufzet schwer dazu:
Panting all the while:
„So zieh ich denn hin ins Grab so früh –
If I go to the grave so soon –
Wohlan, im Grab ist Ruh!“
So be it, in the grave is peace!
Die Stimme sprach dazu:
To which the voice replied:
„Im Grab ist Ruh!“
In the grave is peace!
Dem Reitersmann eine Träne rollt
A tear rolls down the horseman's cheek,
Von der Wange kummervoll:
Pale and woebegone:
„Und ist nur im Grab die Ruhe für mich –
If peace can be found but in the grave –
So ist mir im Grabe wohl.“
I shall be happy in the grave.
Die Stimme erwidert hohl:
With a hollow sound the voice replied:
„Im Grabe wohl!“
Happy in the grave!
