The flowers are long asleep
Johann Baptist Zerlett
The flowers are long asleep
In the moonlight;
They nod their heads
On slender stems.
The blossoming tree's a-quiver,
Whispering as in a dream:
Sleep,
sleep, my child!
The birdies sang so sweetly
While the sun was shining;
Now they've gone to sleep
In their little nests.
Only the cricket sings his song
Deep in the meadow.
Sleep,
sleep, my child!
The Sand Man sneaks up
And peeks in the window
To see if some little darling
Is not in bed.
Whenever he finds a child
He strews sand in his eyes.
Sleep,
sleep, my child!
Sand Man, go away now,
My dear one's fast asleep,
His peepers tightly closed.
Tomorrow morning
Those innocent little eyes
Will shine again to greet me.
Sleep,
sleep, my child!
