They are used for communicating

characters and qualities,

manners of being or having been.

For example:

Janet is disturbed.

Jack and Jill are lazy.

Jimmy is absurd.

Everybody's crazy

But the behaviour of Mama

renders description difficult.

As for the conduct of Papa,

that's indescribable...
