Carnations

Mary Clement, née Mary Wilcken

Early in the morning I wound a little garland

that I sent to my beloved;

I did not let them tell her from whom,

or who had picked the flowers.

But when in the evening I came to dance

and acted furtive and quiet,

she came in with the carnations on her bosom,

looked at me and laughed.
