Alas, how can it happen

(Philipp) Friedrich Silcher

Alas, how can it happen, that I let you go;

I love you from my heart, do believe me!

You have won my soul completely,

so that I don't love anyone else but you.

Blue is a floweret, called forget-me-not,

lay it on your heart and think of me!

Flower and hope die alike, we are rich in love,

for love never dies with me, do believe me.

If I were a little bird, I would like to be with you soon.

I wouldn't shy from falcon and hawk and fly to you quickly.

If a hunter shot me dead, I would sink onto your lap;

if you looked at me sadly, then I would die easily.
