At night

Victor Hollaender

I stand in forest-shadows

as on the verge of life,

the lands like dusky meadows,

the stream like a silver ribbon.

Far away bells are ringing

into the woods.

Alerted, a deer raises its head,

and is soon sleeping again.

But the trees move their tops,

dreaming of walls of rock.

For the master walks over the heights,

blessing the silent land.
