Je ne réclamais rien de toi
E. Barraine
Je ne réclamais rien de toi;
I asked nothing from thee;
I uttered not my name to thine ear.
Lorsque tu m'as laissée, je suis restée silencieuse.
When thou took'st thy leave I stood silent.
J'étais seule près de la source,
I was alone by the well
où l'arbre porte une ombre oblique,
where the shadow of the tree fell aslant,
et les femmes étaient rentrées chez elles
and the women had gone home
with their brown earthen pitchers full to the brim.
Elles m'appelaient et criaient:
They called me and shouted,
« Viens avec nous; le matin passe; il est bientôt midi. »
'Come with us, the morning is wearing on to noon.'
Mais languissamment je m'attardais encore,
But I languidly lingered awhile
perdue parmi de vagues songeries.
lost in the midst of vague musings.
I heard not thy steps as thou camest.
Tes yeux étaient tristes lorsqu'ils reposèrent sur moi;
Thine eyes were sad when they fell on me;
ta voix était lasse quand tu me dis tout bas:
thy voice was tired as thou spokest low -
« Ah! Je suis un voyageur altéré. »
'Ah, I am a thirsty traveller.'
Je secouai mes rêvasseries
I started up from my day-dreams
et versai l'eau de ma cruche
and poured water from my jar
dans tes paumes jointes.
on thy joined palms.
Le feuillage au-dessus de nous frémissait;
The leaves rustled overhead;
le coucou chantait dans l'ombre
the cuckoo sang from the unseen dark,
and perfume of babla flowers
nous parvenait du tournant de la route.
came from the bend of the road.
Je suis restée muette, pleine de honte,
I stood speecess with shame
quand tu m'as demandé mon nom.
when my name thou didst ask.
Qu'avais-je fait, en vérité,
Indeed, what had I done for thee
pour que de moi tu te souviennes?
to keep me in remembrance?
But the memory that I could give water to thee
to allay thy thirst will cling to my heart
dans un enveloppement suave.
and enfold it in sweetness.
L'heure matinale est passée,
The morning hour is late,
l'oiseau pousse son cri monotone,
the bird sings in weary notes,
neem leaves rustle overhead
qui reste immobile et médite.
and I sit and think and think.
