The oath

E. Meyer-Helmund

She said: "I know my duty,

My heart is all too sore;

You flirt with every beauty.

Between us all is o'er.

I want not such a lover!

No kiss you'll get from me,

Till apples you discover

Grow on the lilac tree!"

The window then she fasten'd,

And eke pull'd down the blind,

And he agrieving hasten'd,

And left his life behind.

But when next day he hasten'd,

The last time her to see,

He found an apple fasten'd

Upon the lilac tree.
