Du kleine grünumwachsne Quelle,

Little spring, mantled in green,

An der ich Daphne jüngst gesehn!

where lately I saw Daphne!

Dein Wasser war so still und helle!

Your water was so still and clear,

Und Daphnes Bild darin so schön!

and Daphne's reflection so fair!

O wenn sie sich noch mal am Ufer sehen lässt,

O, if she should appear once more on your banks,

So halte du ihr schönes Bild doch fest;

hold her fair image fast.

Ich schleiche heimlich dann mit nassen Augen hin,

Then I will steal up furtively, with moist eyes,

Dem Bild meine Not zu klagen;

to bewail my distress to her image;
