Mir vor der Seele schwebet,
in my mind's eye;
Ein Mädchen, wie es steht und geht
a maiden who stands and moves,
Aus Himmelsreiz gewebet.

Ich seh's, wenn in mein Fenster mild
I see her when, through my window,
Der junge Morgen blinket,
the new morning shines gently;
Ich seh's, wenn lieblich wie das Bild
I see her when the evening star, as sweet
Der Abendstern mir winket.
as her image, beckons to me.
Mir folgt's, ein treuer Weggenoss',
She follows me, a faithful companion,
Zur Ruh' und in's Getümmel;
through calm and turmoil;
Ich fänd' es in der Erde Schooss,
I would find her in the depths of the earth,
Ich fänd' es selbst im Himmel.

Es schwebt vor mir in Feld und Wald,
She hovers before me in the fields and the woods;
Prangt über'm Blumenbeete,
she appears radiantly above the flower beds,
Und glänzt in Seraphims Gestalt
and shines, in the form of a seraph,
Am Altar, wo ich bete.

Allein das Bild, das spät und früh
But this image, which day and night
Mir vor der Seele schwebet,
hovers before my mind's eye,
Ist's nur Geschöpf der Phantasie,
is it only a figment of my imagination,
Aus Luft und Traum gewebet?

O nein, so warm auch Liebe mir
Oh no, fondly though my love
Das Engelbildniss malet,
paints this angelic vision,
Ist's doch nur Schatten von der Zier,
the vision is but a shadow of the beauty
Die an dem Mädchen strahlet.
