Der blinde Knabe

Schubert, Franz

O sagt, ihr Lieben, mir einmal,

O say! What is that thing call'd light,

Welch Ding ist's, Licht genannt?

which I must ne'er enjoy;

Was sind des Sehens Freuden all'

what are the blessings of the sight,

Die niemals ich gekannt?

O tell your poor blind boy!

Die Sonne, die so hell ihr seht,

You talk of wondrous things you see,

Mir Armen scheint sie nie;

you say the sun shines bright;

Ihr sagt, sie auf- und niedergeht,

I feel him warm, but how can he

Ich weiss nicht, wann noch wie.

or make it day or night?

Ich mach' mir selbst so Tag wie Nacht

My day or night myself I make

Dieweil ich schlaf' und spiel',

when e'er I sleep or play;

Mein inn'res Leben schön mir lacht,

and could I ever keep awake

Ich hab' der Freuden viel.

with me 'twere always day.

Zwar kenn' ich nicht, was euch erfreut,

With heavy sighs I often hear

Doch drückt mich keine Schuld,

you mourn my hapless woe;

Drum freu' ich mich in meinem Leid

but sure with patience I can bear

Und trag' es mit Geduld.

a loss I ne'er can know.

Ich bin so glücklich, bin so reich

Then let not what I cannot have

Mit dem, was Gott mir gab,

my cheer of mind destroy:

Bin wie ein König froh, obgleich

whilst thus I sing, I am a king,

Ein armer, blinder Knab'.

although a poor blind boy.
