Der Blumen Schmerz

Schubert, Franz

Wie tönt es mir so schaurig

With what dread do I hear

Des Lenzes erstes Wehn,

the first breezes of spring;

Wie dünkt es mir so traurig,

how sad it is to me

Dass Blumen auferstehn.

that flowers rise up again.

In ihrer Mutter Armen

They lay so quietly

Da ruhten sie so still,

in their mother's arms,

Nun müssen, ach, die Armen

and now the poor things

Hervor ans Weltgewühl.

must come out into the teeming world.

Die zarten Kinder heben

The delicate children shyly

Die Häupter scheu empor:

raise their heads:

„Wer rufet uns ins Leben

'Who summons us into life

Aus stiller Nacht hervor?“

from the peaceful night?'

Der Lenz mit Zauberworten,

Spring, with magic words,

Mit Hauchen süsser Lust,

breathing sweet delight,

Lockt aus den dunkeln Pforten

lures them through the dark portals

Sie von der Mutter Brust.

from their mother's breast.

In bräutlich heller Feier

In a lustrous bridal ceremony

Erscheint der Blumen Pracht,

the flowers appear in their glory;

Doch fern schon ist der Freier,

but the groom is already far away,

Wild glüht der Sonne Macht.

and the mighty sun glows harshly.

Nun künden ihre Düfte,

Now their fragrance reveals

Dass sie voll Sehnsucht sind;

that they are full of longing;

Was labend würzt die Lüfte,

the refreshing scent that spices the air

Es ist der Schmerzen Kind.

is the child of sorrow.

Die Kelche sinken nieder,

The chalices droop,

Sie schauen erdenwärts:

gazing earthwards:

„O Mutter, nimm uns wieder,

'O mother, receive us again,

Das Leben gibt nur Schmerz.“

for life gives only pain.'

Die welken Blätter fallen,

The withered leaves fall;

Mild deckt der Schnee sie zu –

the snow gently covers them.

Ach Gott! So geht's mit allen,

O God, so it is with all;

Im Grabe nur ist Ruh.

only in the grave is there peace.
