Der Goldschmiedsgesell

Schubert, Franz

Es ist doch meine Nachbarin

My neighbour is

Ein allerliebstes Mädchen!

an enchanting girl.

Wie früh ich in der Werkstatt bin,

In the morning, at my workbench,

Blick' ich nach ihrem Lädchen.

I gaze at her little shop.

Zu Ring und Kette poch' ich dann

Then I beat the fine gold threads

Die feinen goldnen Drächten.

into ring and chain.

Ach! Denk ich, wann? und wieder, wann?

Ah! When? I think, and again, when

Ist solch ein Ring für Kätchen?

will such a ring be for Kätchen?

Ich feile; wohl zerfeil' ich dann

I file away, and at times I file right through

Auch manches goldne Drächten.

many a golden thread.

Der Meister brummt, der harte Mann!

My master grumbles, unfeeling man!

Er merkt, es war das Lädchen.

He sees it was that little shop.

Und flugs wie nur der Handel still,

And as soon as her work is finished

Gleich greift sie nach dem Rädchen,

she reaches for her spinning-wheel.

Ich weiss wohl, was sie spinnen will:

I well know what she intends to spin.

Es hofft, das liebe Mädchen.

She has her hopes, the darling girl.

Das kleine Füsschen tritt und tritt;

As her little foot keeps on working

Da denk' ich mir das Wädchen,

I think of her dainty calves

Das Strumpfband denk' ich auch wohl mit,

and of her garter;

Ich schenkt's dem lieben Mädchen.

I gave it to the darling girl.

Und nach den Lippen führt der Schatz

My sweetheart takes

Das allerfeinste Fädchen.

the finest thread to her lips.

O wär' ich doch an seinem Platz,

Ah, if only I could be in its place,

Wie küsst' ich mir das Mädchen.

how I should kiss her!

Zu Ring und Kette poch' ich dann

Then I beat the fine gold threads

Die feinen goldnen Drächten.

into ring and chain.
