Noch in meines Lebens Lenze

Liess ich in des Vaters Haus.

and a dark word of faith.
„Wandle,“ rief's, „der Weg ist offen,
'Journey onwards,' came the cry, 'the way is open,
Immer nach dem Aufgang fort.
ever onwards toward the east.
„Bis zu einer goldnen Pforten
'Until you reach a golden gate;
Du gelangst, da gehst du ein,
there you will enter.
Denn das Irdische wird dorten
For there earthly things
Himmlisch, unvergänglich sein.“

Abend ward's und wurde Morgen,
Evening came, and morning;
Nimmer, nimmer stand ich still,
never, never did I stop.
Aber immer blieb's verborgen,
Yet what I seek, what I long for,
Was ich suche, was ich will.
always remained hidden.
Berge lagen mir im Wege,
Mountains loomed in my path,
Ströme hemmten meinen Fuss,
rivers checked my step;
Über Schlünde baut ich Stege,
I built bridges over the abyss
Brücken durch den wilden Fluss.
and across the turbulent river.
Und zu eines Stroms Gestaden
And I came to the bank of a river
Kam ich, der nach Morgen floss;
that flowed eastwards.
Froh vertrauend seinem Faden,
Joyfully trusting to its current
Warf ich mich in seinen Schoss.
I threw myself upon its bosom.
Hin zu einem grossen Meere
The play of its waves
Trieb mich seiner Wellen Spiel;
bore me to a great ocean;
Vor mir liegt's in weiter Leere,
it lies before me in its vast emptiness.
