Der Schäfer und der Reiter
Schubert, Franz
Ein Schäfer sass im Grünen,
A shepherd sat amid the greenery,
Sein Liebchen süss im Arm;
his sweetheart in his arms;
Durch Buchenwipfel schienen
through the tops of the beech trees
Der Sonne Strahlen warm.
shone the sun's warm rays.
Sie kosten froh und heiter
Joyfully, blithely,
Von Liebeständelei.
they dallied and caressed.
Da ritt bewehrt ein Reiter
Then a horseman, armed,
Den Glücklichen vorbei.
rode by the happy pair.
„Sitz ab und suche Kühle,“
'Dismount and come to the cool shade,'
Rief ihm der Schäfer zu.
the shepherd called to him.
„Des Mittags nahe Schwüle
'The sultry midday heat approaches
Gebietet stille Ruh'.
and bids us rest quietly.
„Noch lacht im Morgenglanze
'Here bush and flower
So Strauch als Blume hier,
still smile in the radiant morning,
Und Liebchen pflückt zum Kränze
and my sweetheart will pick the loveliest flowers
Die schönsten Blüten dir.“
to make you a garland.'
Da sprach der finstre Reiter:
Then the gloomy rider spoke:
„Nie hält mich Wald und Flur;
'Woods and meadows can never keep me:
Mich treibt mein Schicksal weiter,
my fate drives me onwards,
Und ach, mein ernster Schwur.
and, ah, my solemn vow.
„Ich gab mein junges Leben
'I gave up my young life
Dahin um schnöden Sold.
for vile money.
Glück kann ich nicht erstreben
I can never aspire to happiness;
Nur höchstens Ruhm und Gold.
at best only to gold and glory.
„Drum schnell, mein Ross, und trabe
'Make haste then, my steed, and trot
Vorbei wo Blumen blühn,
past the flowers in bloom.
Einst lohnt wohl Ruh' im Grabe
One day the peace of the grave
Des Kämpfenden Bemühn.“
may reward the warrior's toil.'
