Des Fräuleins Liebeslauschen
Schubert, Franz
Hier unten steht ein Ritter
A knight stands down below
Im hellen Mondenstrahl,
in the bright moonlight,
Und singt zu seiner Zither
and sings to his zither
Ein Lied von süsser Qual:
a song of sweet suffering:
„Lüfte, spannt die blauen Schwingen
'Breezes, gently spread your blue wings
Sanft für meine Botschaft aus,
and bear my message;
Rufet sie mit leisem Klingen
with soft strains call her
An dies Fensterlein heraus.
to this window.
„Sagt ihr, dass im Blätterdache
'Tell her that beneath the canopy of leaves
Seufz' ein wohlbekannter Laut,
a familiar voice is sighing;
Sagt ihr, dass noch einer wache,
tell her that someone is still awake,
Und die Nacht sei kühl und traut.
and that the night is cool and intimate.
„Sagt ihr, wie des Mondes Welle
'Tell her how the wave of moonlight
Sich an ihrem Fenster bricht,
breaks upon her window;
Sagt ihr, wie der Wald, die Quelle
tell her how the grove and the fountain
Heimlich und von Liebe spricht!
speak secretly of love.
„Lass ihn leuchten durch die Bäume,
'Let the sweet light of your image
Deines Bildes süssen Schein,
shine through the trees,
Das sich hold in meine Träume
your image which is gently woven
Und mein Wachen webet ein.“
into my dreams and my waking hours.'
Doch drang die zarte Weise
But the tender melody could not have reached
Wohl nicht zu Liebchens Ohr,
his sweetheart's ear,
Der Sänger schwang sich leise
for the singer swung himself softly
Zum Fensterlein empor.
up to her window.
Und oben zog der Ritter
And once up there the knight
Ein Kränzchen aus der Brust;
drew a garland from his breast
Das band er fest am Gitter
and bound it fast to the grille,
Und seufzte: „Blüht in Lust!“
sighing: 'Bloom in joy.'
„Und fragt sie, wer euch brachte,
'And if she asks who brought you,
Dann, Blumen, tut ihr kund.“
then, flowers, tell her.'
Ein Stimmchen unten lachte:
A voice below laughed:
„Dein Ritter Liebemund.“
'Your knight, Liebemund!'
