Romanze des Richard Löwenherz

Schubert, Franz

Grosser Taten tat der Ritter

The knight achieved great deeds

Fern im heil'gen Lande viel;

Far away in the Holy Land;

Und das Kreuz auf seiner Schulter

The cross on his shoulder

Bleicht' im rauhen Kampfgewühl.

Had dimmed in the fierce tumult of battle.

Manche Narb' auf seinem Schilde

Many a dent on his shield

Trug er aus dem Kampfgefilde;

He bore from the battlefield;

An der Dame Fenster dicht,

Thus, close by his lady's window,

Sang er so im Mondenlicht:

He sang in the moonlight:

„Heil der Schönen! aus der Ferne

'Joy to the fair! Your knight

Ist der Ritter heimgekehrt,

Has returned from distant lands,

Doch nichts durft' er mit sich nehmen,

But he could bring nothing with him

Als sein treues Ross und Schwert.

Save his trusty steed and sword;

Seine Lanze, seine Sporen

His lance, his spurs

Sind allein ihm unverloren,

Are all he has.

Dies ist all sein irdisch Glück,

This is all his earthly wealth –

Dies und Theklas Liebesblick!

This, and Tekla's loving gaze.

„Heil der Schönen! was der Ritter

'Joy to the fair! What your knight has achieved

Tat verdankt' er ihrer Gunst,

He owes to your favour;

Darum soll ihr Lob verkünden

Therefore the minstrel's sweet art

Stets des Sängers süsse Kunst.

Shall always be to sing her praises.

„Seht, da ist sie“, wird es heissen,

'See, it is she', they will proclaim

Wenn sie ihre Schöne preissen,

When they extol the fair beauty,

„Deren Augen Himmelsglanz

'Whose celestial eyes

Gab bei Ascalon den Kranz!“

Won the garland at Askalon.'

„Schaut ihr Lächeln, eh'rne Männer

'Behold her smile – it laid men of iron

Streckt es leblos in den Staub,

Lifeless in the dust,

Und Iconium, ob sein Sultan

And Iconium, though his Sultan

Mutig stritt, ward ihm zum Raub.

Fought bravely, became its victim.

Diese Locken, wie sie golden

These golden locks,

Schwimmen um die Brust der Holden,

Flowing around the fair maid's breast,

Legten manchem Muselmann

Cast many a Moslem

Fesseln unzerreissbar an.

In unbreakable chains.

„Heil der Schönen! dir gehöret,

'Joy to the fair! To you, my beloved,

Holde, was dein Ritter tat –

Belongs all that your knight has achieved;

Darum öffne ihm die Pforte,

Then open the gate to him,

Nachtwind streift, die Stunde naht.

The night wind blows, the hour approaches.

Dort in Syriens heissen Zonen,

There, in Syria's torrid clime,

Musst' er leicht des Nords entwohnen,

He became a stranger to the cold north.

Lieb' ersticke nun die Scham,

Let love stifle modesty,

Weil von ihm der Ruhm dir kam.“

Since your glory came from him.'
