SMELL

G. Medlock

Earth and rain

water and earth

The pine trees waft a scent of knowing

Echoes of past life

My brother and I

roaming the woods and mountainsides

Playing, fighting, laughing

skipping stones

climbing trees

The smell of blood

my mother nursing a scrape on my knee

Mixed with the smell of her perfume

metal and sweet

The night air gusts

lashes the cuts on my face

the smell is gone

only cold

emptiness

frost coming on
