Spontini, Gaspare

An des Paradieses Schwelle

At the threshold of paradise,

Steht die Peri, tief gebeugt,

Stands the peri, bent over,

Trauernd, daß an dieser Stelle

Mourning, that, here, at this place,

Nie ihr Aug' das Licht erreicht:

Her eye never receives the light:

Sie vernimmt den Klang der Sphären,

She hears the sound of the spheres,

Hört des Ew'gen Lob und Preis,

Hears the praise and splendour of the eternal

Kann dem Gram nicht länger wehren,

And no longer able to resist grief,

Und die Thrän' rinnt glühend heiß.

Tears run down burning hot.

Und der Engel an der Pforte,

And the angel at the gate,

Welche Erd' und Himmel trennt,

Separating heaven from earth,

Hört die Klage, spricht die Worte:

Hears the lament and speaks the words:

„Der ist Hoffnung noch vergönnt:

„Hope is still granted to her:

Gnade soll die Peri haben,

Mercy shall the peri have,

Die zu diesem ew'gen Thor

Which to this eternal gate

Bringt die köstlichste der Gaben,

Brings the most precious of gifts,

Die der Himmel sich erkor!“

Chosen by heaven itself!“
