Der Mohrenfürst auf der Messe

C. Loewe

Auf der Messe, da zieht es, da stürmt es hinan

To the fair they are thronging, in streams they advance,

Zum Cirkus, zum glatten, geebneten Plan.

Within the smooth circle, the steeds how they prance!

Es schmettern Trompeten, das Becken klingt,

The trumpets they flourish, the cymbals they sound,

Dumpf wirbelt die Trommel, Bajazzo springt.

The hollow drum rolls, the harlequins bound.

Herbei, herbei! das tobt und drängt;

On! On! What a noise! What a deafening din!

Die Reiter fliegen; die Bahn durchsprengt

The riders advance, with a bound they dash in!

Der Türkenrapp' und der Brittenfuchs;

On the Arab's black barb, on the Briton's bright bay;

Die Weiber zeigen den üppigen Wuchs.

The women voluptuous graces display.

Und an der Reitbahn verschleiertem Tor

At the veiled entrance-gate of the circus there stood

Steht ernst ein krausgelockter Mohr;

A curly-haired Moor, in sorrowful mood;

Die türkische Trommel schlägt er laut,

The Turkish drum rolls 'neath his vigorous blows,

Auf der Trommel liegt eine Löwenhaut.

On the drum does the skin of a lion repose.

Er sieht nicht der Reiter zierlichen Schwung,

He sees not the grace of the rider's deed,

Er sieht nicht der Roße gewagten Sprung.

He sees not the leap of the daring steed,

Mit starrem, trockenem Auge schaut

The motionless, tearless eye of the chief

Der Mohr auf die zotige Löwenhaut.

On the hide of the lion reposes with grief.

Er denkt an den fernen, fernen Niger,

He thinks of the far, of the far distant Niger,

Und daß er gejagt den Löwen und Tiger;

And that he had hunted the lion, the tiger;

Und daß er geschwungen im Kampfe das Schwert,

And that he had wielded his sword in the fight,

Und daß er nimmer zum Lager gekehrt;

And that to his tent he returned not at night;

Und daß Sie Blumen für ihn gepflückt;

That for him she had gathered sweet flowers so fair,

Und daß Sie das Haar mit Perlen geschmückt.

And that she had woven bright pearls in her hair –

Sein Auge ward naß, mit dumpfem Klang

In his eye gleamed a tear, with the echo of thunder

Schlug er das Fell, daß es rasselnd zersprang.

The parchment he struck, and rent it asunder.
