Odins Meeres-Ritt

C. Loewe

Meister Oluf, der Schmied auf Helgoland,

Master Oluf, the blacksmith on Helgoland,

Verlässt den Amboss um Mitternacht.

Leaves his anvil at dead of night.

Es heulet der Wind am Meeresstrand,

The wind is howling along the shore

When a loud knock is heard at his door:

„Heraus, heraus, beschlag' mir mein Ross,

'Come out, come out and shoe my horse,

I have far to go and day draws nigh!'

Meister Oluf öffnet der Türe Schloss,

Master Oluf unlocks the door

And an imposing rider stands before him.

Schwarz ist sein Panzer, sein Helm und Schild;

Black his armour and helmet and shield,

A broad sword hangs by his side.

Sein Rappe schüttelt die Mähne gar wild

His steed shakes its wild mane

Und stampft mit Ungeduld die Erd'!

And paws the ground impatiently!

„Woher so spät? Wohin so schnell?“

'Whence do you come, whither are you bound so late?'

„In Norderney kehrt' ich gestern ein.

'I arrived in Nordeney yesterday.

Mein Pferd ist rasch, die Nacht is hell,

My horse is swift, the night is clear,

Before sunrise I must be in Norway!'

„Hättet Ihr Flügel, so glaubt' ich's gern!“

'If you had wings, I'd believe you!'

„Mein Rappe, der läuft wohl mit dem Wind.

'My steed runs like the wind,

Yet here and there a star grows pale!

So make haste and shoe my horse!'

Meister Oluf nimmt das Eisen zur Hand,

Master Oluf takes the horseshoe in his hand,

It is too small, he stretches it out.

And as it grows around the hoof,

Da ergreifen den Meister Bang' und Graus.

The master is seized with dread and fear.

The rider mounts, his sword clatters:

„Nun, Meister Oluf, gute Nacht!

'Now, Master Oluf, I bid you good night!

Wohl hast du beschlagen Odin's Pferd';

You have shod Odin's steed with skill,

Ich eile hinüber zur blutigen Schlacht.“

I hasten away to do bloody battle!'

The steed speeds forth over land and sea,

Um Odin's Haupt erglänzet ein Licht.

A light glows about Odin's head.

Zwölf Adler fliegen hinter ihm her;

Twelve eagles fly in his wake,

Sie fliegen schnell, und erreichen ihn nicht.

They fly so fast but cannot reach him
