Ein Leben war's im Ährenfeld,
What activity in the field of wheat,
Wie sonst wohl nirgend auf der Welt.
Like nowhere else in the world!
Musik und Kirmes weit und breit
Music and church fair far and wide
Und lauter Lust und Fröhlichkeit.
And nothing but joy and merriment.
Die Grillen zirpten früh am Tag
The crickets chirped from break of day,
Und luden ein zum Hochgelag:
Bidding everyone to the great feast:
Hier ist es gut, herein!
Life is good here, come on in!
Hier schenkt man Tau und Blütenwein!
Dew and nectar wine for all!
Der Käfer kam mit seiner Frau,
The beetle came with his wife,
Trank hier ein Mässlein kühlen Tau,
Drank a cup of sweet dew,
Und wo nur winkt' ein Blümelein,
And wherever a little flower beckoned,
Da kehrte gleich das Bienchen ein.
A little bee came at once to call.
Den Fliegen ward die Zeit nicht lang,
The flies were not at all bored,
Sie summten manchen frohen Sang,
They hummed many a happy tune,
Die Mücken tanzten ihren Reihn
The midges danced round and round
Wohl auf und ab im Sonnenschein.
In the sunshine up and down.
Das war ein Leben ringsumher,
What activity all around,
Als ob es ewig Kirmes wär,
As though the church fair would last forever,
Die Gäste zogen aus und ein
The guests came and went
Und liessen sich's gar wohl dort sein.
And indulged themselves there.
Wie aber geht es in der Welt?
But how do things fare in the world?
Heut ist gemäht das Ährenfeld.
Today the field of wheat is reaped,
Zerstöret ist das schöne Haus,
The beautiful house destroyed,
Und hin ist Kirmes, Tanz und Schmau
And gone are church fair, dance and feast.
