I lie there under the trees

Mendelssohn, Felix

I lie there under the trees, my heart troubled and heavy;

Oh tell me, tell me truly, my heart, what oppresses you?

The sky has clouded over, the winds blow so eerily,

Bringing me the gloomy thought that I must mourn wherever I go.

You have abandoned happiness, your gaze wanders,

Oh come back to the joyous ones, oh turn back to your own kind!

Happiness has abandoned me where everything is dying in the grove.

The autumn sun is already sinking, and soon darkness will break.

Let the days of bliss vanish, let the leaves fall from above!

They will return to you again, rejuvenated by the dark grave.

The sky now clears, the sun emerges, and the grove is young again;

but my hope vanished and will not be reborn - and that is why I mourn.
