The garland
Mendelssohn, Felix
By Celia's arbour in the still of night,
hang the flowers, the pledge of true love!
Perhaps when the morning laughs again
my darling's hand will weave them into a garland.
And if upon the splendour of her bosom there falls
a drop of dew from your lap,
then say that it is not the dew of the night
but only tears that her friend forgot there.
