Winterlied

Mendelssohn, Felix

Mein Sohn, wo willst du hin so spät?

My son, where are you bound so late?

Geh' nicht zum Wald hinaus,

Do not go out into the woods,

Die Schwester find'st du nimmermehr,

You'll never find your sister now,

O bleib' bei mir im Haus!

O stay with me at home!

Da draussen ist's so kalt, so rauh,

Out there it is so cold, so raw,

Und heftig weht der Wind;

The wind blows fiercely too,

Bist ganz allein im weiten Wald,

You are all alone in the great forest,

O bleib' bei mir, mein Kind!

O stay with me, my child!

O Mutter, Mutter lass mich zieh'n,

O mother, mother let me go,

Trockne die Trän' im Blick,

Dry your weeping eyes,

Die Schwester find' ich ganz gewiss

I know I shall find my sister

Und bring' sie uns zurück.

And bring her back to us.

Bis ich sie find', ist doch kein' Rast,

I shall not rest until I find her,

Ist doch kein' Ruhe hier;

No peace shall there be here;

Den Schnee und Wind bin ich gewohnt,

I am well used to snow and wind,

Bald kehr' ich heim zu dir.

I'll soon come home to you.

Die Mutter sah ihm lange nach,

His mother kept gazing after him,

Er ging zum Wald hinaus;

As he went out to the woods;

Der Wind ward still, die Nacht verging,

The wind abated, the night passed,

Doch er kehrt' nicht zum Haus.

But never did he return.

Und der Schnee zerschmolz,

And the snow melted,

Der Wind verweht',

The wind died down,

Kam wieder Sonnenschein

The sun returned once more,

Und Blüth' und Blätter überall:

And blossom and leaves were everywhere:

Die Mutter blieb allein.

The mother remained alone.

O Mutter, Mutter lass mich zieh'n,

O mother, mother let me go,

Trockne die Trän' im Blick,
