Snedronningen
N. Gade
Høit ligger paa Marken den hvide Snee,
Brightly shimmers the snow on the wide path,
Dog kan man Lyset i Hytten see;
Only a lonely light flickers in a little hut.
Der venter Pigen ved Lampens Skjær
There, a girl waits for her beloved by the lamplight.
Paa sin Hjertenskjær.
I Møllen er stille, see Hjulet staaer.
Silent is the mill, the grindstone stands still.
Snart glatter Svenden sit gule Haar,
Quickly the young man smoothes his blonde hair;
Saa hopper han lystigt, hei een, to, tre,
And cheerfully skips, one, two, three,
Over Iis og Snee.
Over ice and snow.
Han synger omkap med den skarpe Vind,
Happily he sings through the icy wind,
Der rødmer saa smukt hans sunde Kind.
which burns his beautiful cheeks red.
Snee-Dronningen rider paa sorten Sky
The Snow Queen travels over the forest
Over Mark og By.
upon the grey clouds.
“Du er mig saa smuk ved Snee-Lysets Skjær,
'How beautiful you are by the snow's glow,
Jeg kaarer Dig til min Hjertenskjær,
I choose you to be mine!
Kom, følg mig høit paa min svømmende Ø,
Come, follow me to my swimming cloud of snow,
Over Bjerg og Sø!”
Over the mountains and seas!'
Snee-Flokkene falde saa tyst, saa tæt.
The snowflakes fall so large and dense,
“Jeg fanger Dig vist i mit Blomster-Net!
'My floral web will catch you; oh do not flee me!
Hvor Snee-Dyngen reiser sig høit paa Eng,
My brides' bed awaits, shimmering and beautiful,
Staaer vor Brudeseng!”
Come, oh betrothed, come,
Ei meer kan man Lyset i Hytten see;
The light in the little hut shines no more,
I Ringdands hvirvler den hvide Snee,
The flakes swirl white in thick rows.
Et Stjerneskud spiller bag Skyen smukt,
A little bright star shoots from the clouds-
Nu er det alt slukt.
And is suddenly extinguished.
Klart skinner Solen paa Mark og Eng;
The Sun glows brightly over field and forest,
Han sover saa sødt i sin Brude-Seng.
Asleep in the brides' bed so icy cold.
Den Pigelil ængstes, til Møllen hun gaaer,
The girl grows anxious and goes to the mill,
Men Drivhjulet staaer.
Yet the grindstone stands still.
