Schön Hedwig

Schumann, Robert

Im Kreise der Vasallen sitzt

In the circle of vassals sits

Der Ritter, jung und kühn;

The knight, so young and bold,

Sein dunkles Feuerauge blitzt,

His dark eyes flask with fire,

Als wollt' er ziehn zum Kampfe,

As though on battle he were bent,

Und seine Wangen glühn.

And his cheeks are glowing.

Ein zartes Mägdlein tritt heran

A gentle girl approaches him

Und füllt ihm den Pokal.

And fills his goblet with wine.

Zurück mit Sitten tritt sie dann;

Then she modestly withdraws;

Da fällt auf ihre Stirne

And the brightest rays of dawn

Der klarste Morgenstrahl.

Fall upon her brow.

Der Ritter aber faßt sie schnell

The knight then swiftly

Bei ihrer weißen Hand.

Seizes her white hand.

Ihr blaues Auge, frisch und hell,

She lowers her gaze,

Sie schlägt es erst zu Boden,

Those fresh, blue, limpid eyes,

Dann hebt sie's unverwandt.

Then steadfastly looks up.

„Schön Hedwig, die du vor mir stehst,

'Fair Hedwig, as you stand before me,

Drei Dinge sag' mir frei:

Answer frankly these three things:

Woher du kommst, wohin du gehst,

Whence do you come, whither do you go,

Warum du stets mir folgest;

Why do you always follow me?

Das sind der Dinge drei!“

Those are my three questions!'

Woher ich komm? Ich komm von Gott,

Whence do I come? I come from God,

So hat man mir gesagt,

That was what I was told when,

Als ich, verfolgt von Hohn und Spott,

Pursued by scorn and mockery,

Nach Vater und nach Mutter

I once enquired with tears

Mit Tränen einst gefragt.

About my father and mother.

Wohin ich geh? Nichts treibt mich fort,

Whither do I go? Nothing drives me away,

Die Welt ist gar zu weit.

The world is far too vast.

Was tauscht' ich eitel Ort um Ort?

Why should I vainly go from place to place,

Sie ist ja allenthalben

When the world on every side

Voll Lust und Herrlichkeit.

Is full of joy and splendour.

Warum ich folg', wohin du winkst?

Why do I follow your every sign?

Ei, sprich, wie könnt' ich ruhn?

Ah! how could I ever stay put?

Ich schenk' den Wein dir, den du trinkst,

I pour the wine that you drink,

Ich bat dich drum auf Knieen

I begged that favour on my knees

Und möcht' es ewig tun!

And would like to do it forever!

„So frage ich, du blondes Kind,

'I shall ask you, then, O fair-haired child,

Noch um ein Viertes dich;

A fourth and final question;

Dies Letzte sag' mir an geschwind,

Answer me without delay,

Dann frag' ich dich Nichts weiter,

And I shall ask you nothing more,

Sag', Mägdlein, liebst du mich?“

Tell me, my girl, if you love me?'

Im Anfang steht sie starr und stumm,

At first she stands benumbed and silent,

Dann schaut sie langsam sich

Then she slowly casts her gaze

Im Kreis der ernsten Gäste um,

Round the grave guests gathered there,

Und faltet ihre Hände

And folds her hands

Und spricht: Ich liebe dich!

And answers: I love you!

Nun aber weiß ich auch, wohin

But suddenly now I know

Ich gehen muß von hier;

Whither I must go from here;

Wohl ist's mir klar in meinem Sinn:

Now I am clear that,

Nachdem ich dies gestanden,

After this confession,

Ziemt nur der Schleier mir!

The veil alone becomes me!

„Und wenn du sagst, du kommst von Gott,

'And if you say you come from God,

So fühl' ich, das ist wahr.

I feel that you speak the truth.

Drum führ' ich auch, trotz Hohn und Spott,

So I shall lead you, God's dearest child,

Als seine liebste Tochter

Despite scorn and mockery,

Noch heut dich zum Altar.

To the altar this very day!

„Ihr edlen Herrn, ich lud verblümt

'Noble lords, it was in veiled language

Zu einem Fest Euch ein;

That I invited you to celebrate;

Ihr Ritter, stolz und hochgerühmt,

Proud and illustrious knights,

So folgt mir zur Kapelle,

Follow me to the chapel now

Es soll mein schönstes sein!“

For the finest celebration of all!'
