Sturmlied
V. Ullmann
O Brausen des Meers und Stimme des Sturms
O roar of the sea and voice of the storm,
Und Irren im Nebelschwarm!
As I wandered in swirling mists!
In Hafens Ruhe, im Schutze des Turms,
In the harbour's peace, in the tower's shelter,
Wie eng und arm.
How cramped and wretched.
Ich will kein Kissen mir unters Haupt,
I want no pillow beneath my head,
Kein Schreiten auf Teppichen weich;
No walking on soft carpets;
Hat mir der Sturm auch die Segel geraubt,
Even though the storm robbed me of sails –
Da war ich reich!
Then I was rich!
O herrliche Fahrt im Windeshauch
How splendid to sail in the teeth of the wind
Hinauf und hinab und zurück!
Up and down and back!
Nur kämpfend, und unterlieg ich auch,
Even though I'm defeated,
Ist Leben Glück.
Struggle alone brings joy in life.
