The meadow saffron
Richard Georg Strauss
Upon a freshly mown pasture
stands a solitary meadow saffron,
its body that of a lily,
its color that of a rose.
Yet it is poison that glints from the chalice,
pure and red -
the last flower - the last love -
both are fair, yet both are deadly.
