Ablösung im Sommer

Mahler, Gustav

Kukuk hat sich zu Tode gefallen

The cuckoo has sung himself to death

An einer grünen Weiden,

On a green willow.

Kukuk ist tot, hat sich zu Tod' gefallen!

Cuckoo is dead, has sung himself to death!

Wer soll uns denn den Sommer lang

Who shall now all summer long

Die Zeit und Weil vertreiben?

While away the time for us?

Ei das soll tun Frau Nachtigall,

Ah! Mrs Nightingale shall do that,

Die sitzt auf grünem Zweige;

She sits on the green branch,

Die kleine, feine Nachtigall,

That small and graceful nightingale,

Die liebe, süße Nachtigall!

That sweet and lovely nightingale!

Sie singt und springt, ist allzeit froh,

She hops and sings, is always joyous,

Wenn andre Vögel schweigen.

When other birds are silent.

Wir warten auf Frau Nachtigall;

We shall wait for Mrs Nightingale,

Die wohnt im grünen Hage,

She lives in the green grove,

Und wenn der Kukuk zu Ende ist,

And when the cuckoo's time is up,

Dann fängt sie an zu schlagen!

She will start to sing!

Ei das soll tun Frau Nachtigall,

Ah! Mrs Nightingale shall do that,

Die sitzt auf grünem Zweige;

She sits on the green branch,

Die kleine, feine Nachtigall,

That small and graceful nightingale,

Die liebe, süße Nachtigall!
